Produced from 1953-2002, the Cadillac Eldorado, meaning, “the gilded one,” was a Cadillac mainstay through ten generations.
- The car comes with 50 miles per day ($1.50/mi fee for additional miles driven).
- The owner will require you to pay a deposit before renting this vehicle ($1,000). This deposit is a credit card authorization charged in-person when you pick up the vehicle. When the car is returned without damage, the deposit is returned.
In pure Cadillac fashion, it shared design cues with multiple GM vehicles throughout the years, including the Bel Air, Buick Electra, Oldsmobile 98, and in the case of this seventh generation ’76 model, the Buick Rivera and Oldsmobile Tornado.
Equipped with a gargantuan 8.2L V8 engine, the nearly 19-foot land yacht was marketed as “The Last American Convertible,” which went on to cause some controversy when the Eldorado was again marketed as a convertible in 1984. It was reported that some buyers purchased the convertible merely as an investment, and in some cases, had a flatbed ready and waiting to take the car to a climate-controlled facility for long-term storage.
Due to the highly-successful marketing campaign, there was a large demand for the actual ‘last convertible’ so Cadillac created 200 identical ‘last convertibles’ while retaining the actual ‘last convertible’, model number 014000, for its own historical records. 1976 also saw the first standard four-wheel disc brakes in the Eldorado line-up.
Cadillac built 14,000 convertibles in 1976, including 200 Bicentennial Edition Convertibles to commemorate the 200th birthday of the United States. However, the Bicentennial Edition trim was really just a clever ruse to make it appear that Cadillac was not simply taking advantage of the high volume of requests for the ‘last convertible’.
Whatever the case, this vintage American convertible is an absolute beauty and would be right at home cruising the streets of Los Angeles or posing for photos. With its stunning coupling of a white exterior and red interior, it strongly conveys the classic limousine feeling Cadillac was going for at the time.
This classic Eldorado is available for hire in the Los Angeles Area and includes 100 free miles.
